What Is Fundal Height? Meaning, Normal Range by Week and Why It Matters
Read time7 min

At your antenatal visits after around 20 weeks, your doctor or midwife will measure your bump with a tape measure. That reading is your fundal height, one of the simplest, oldest ways to check your baby is growing on track. It is quick, painless and costs nothing, and it helps flag when a scan might be needed. Here is what fundal height means, what counts as normal by week, and when it is worth a closer look.

Quick Answer

Fundal height is the distance in centimetres from the top of your pubic bone to the top of your uterus (the fundus), measured during pregnancy to estimate your baby's growth and gestational age. From about 24 weeks, your fundal height in centimetres roughly matches the number of weeks you are pregnant, usually within 2 to 3 cm. It is a screening check, not a diagnosis, an unexpected measurement usually leads to an ultrasound to confirm.

What Is Fundal Height?

Fundal height (also called symphysis-fundal height) is the measurement from the top of your pubic bone to the top of your uterus, the fundus, taken in centimetres with a tape measure. As your baby grows, the uterus rises higher in your abdomen, so this distance increases week by week. It gives your doctor a fast, low-cost snapshot of your baby's growth and your progress through pregnancy, without any equipment beyond a tape.

Why Does Fundal Height Matter?

Fundal height matters because it is a simple screening tool that helps your doctor (NHS):

  • Track your baby's growth over time

  • Estimate gestational age and cross-check your due date

  • Spot possible concerns early, such as a baby measuring larger or smaller than expected

  • Decide when an ultrasound is needed

It is non-invasive, free and repeatable at every visit, which makes it useful everywhere, especially where scans are less accessible. It does not replace an ultrasound, but it helps decide when one is warranted.

What Is a Normal Fundal Height by Week?

From about 24 weeks, a helpful rule of thumb is that your fundal height in centimetres roughly equals your weeks of pregnancy, usually within 2 to 3 cm (Cleveland Clinic). So at 30 weeks, a fundal height of about 28 to 32 cm is expected.

Pregnancy Week

Approx. Fundal Height

About 22 to 26 cm

28 weeks

About 26 to 30 cm

32 weeks

36 weeks

Earlier on, doctors go by landmarks: around 12 weeks the uterus reaches the pubic bone, and around 20 weeks it reaches the navel. After about 36 weeks, the measurement can dip slightly as the baby's head engages in the pelvis. These are averages, small differences are normal, and the trend across visits matters more than any single reading.

How Is Fundal Height Measured?

Your doctor asks you to lie back with your bladder empty, finds the top of your uterus by feel, and measures in a straight line down to the top of your pubic bone. It takes seconds. A full bladder, your body type, or the baby's position can all nudge the number slightly, which is why one measurement is never read in isolation.

What If Your Fundal Height Is Larger or Smaller Than Expected?

A single off reading is usually not a cause for alarm, it often just reflects your dates or the baby's position. But a measurement that is consistently off, or off by more than 2 to 3 cm, may prompt an ultrasound to check (ACOG):

  • Larger than expected: inaccurate dates, a bigger baby, extra amniotic fluid, twins, or fibroids

  • Smaller than expected: inaccurate dates, slower growth (growth restriction), low amniotic fluid, or the baby lying low or sideways

In most cases the scan is reassuring. Where it is not, finding it early means your care can be adjusted in time.

Expert Insight: A Screening Tool, Not a Diagnosis

Fundal height is a screen, not a diagnosis. Its accuracy is affected by maternal weight, fibroids, the baby's position and a full bladder, and studies show it is better at raising a question than answering one. That is exactly its job: to be a cheap, quick prompt for when a more precise test, an ultrasound, is needed. This is why doctors look at the pattern over several visits rather than reacting to one number.

FAQs

When do doctors start measuring fundal height?

Usually from around 20 to 24 weeks, once the uterus has grown enough to measure reliably. Before that, doctors track growth by feeling for landmarks such as the pubic bone (about 12 weeks) and the navel (about 20 weeks).

Does fundal height tell the baby's exact weight or gender?

No. It estimates growth and gestational age, not exact weight, and it says nothing about the baby's gender. An ultrasound gives a weight estimate; in India, sex determination is illegal under the PCPNDT Act.

Should I worry if my fundal height is off by a few centimetres?

Usually not. A difference of a couple of centimetres is common and often reflects your dates or the baby's position. Your doctor watches the trend and orders a scan only if the measurement is consistently or significantly off.

Is fundal height accurate for twins?

It is less reliable with twins or more, since the uterus is larger than a single-baby measurement expects. Multiple pregnancies are monitored mainly with ultrasound rather than fundal height alone.

Summary

Fundal height is the simple tape measurement from your pubic bone to the top of your uterus that helps your doctor track your baby's growth. From about 24 weeks it roughly matches your weeks of pregnancy in centimetres. It is a quick screening check, not a diagnosis, so trust the trend across visits, and let a scan settle any question if a reading is unexpected.
